What Others Say About American Wildlands
"What I admire particularly about American Wildlands is that they combine science-driven conservation efforts with community engagement. Connectivity is everything, as we know, and connecting with local people for on-the-ground action is no less crucial than connecting patches of landscape via corridors"
- David Quammen; AWL member and Award-Winning Writer
"I’ve been visiting the U.S. Northern Rockies for 20 years now. Hiking through Yellowstone National Park. Camping in the vast expanses of wilderness in Idaho. Floating the Gallatin River. Some of my most precious memories come from my time there. But I don’t want them to be just memories. I want to return every year to enjoy the incredible, unique beauty of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. I want to bring my kids to hunt and fish and enjoy the last great expanses of wildlands and pure streams and rivers in the Lower 48.
So this year, I joined American Wildlands. I like the work they’re doing to safeguard the U.S. Northern Rockies. I like how they’re protecting the wildlife corridors that animals like elk and grizzly bear use to move safely between parks and wilderness areas. I like how they’re helping build wildlife crossings to help those animals get across busy roadways. I like how they’re protecting the last streams where you can fish for the same pure species of native trout that Lewis and Clark caught. I like knowing somebody’s keeping an eye on the things that I’ve been going up there to enjoy all these years.”
- Jim Farrell; AWL member, Sacramento, CA
“My husband and I joined American Wildlands a while ago because we liked what we saw on the organization’s webpage. This quarter, while doing research on protecting grizzly habitat in western Montana, I put AWL as a priority stop during our visit to Bozeman. Our support for the organization was strengthened based on the dedication and competence of staff we met and the focuses they have developed for addressing critical issues in the region. As college faculty and land use planners, we were quite impressed by the quality of the GIS tools and the usefulness of maps for making better decisions about avoiding or mitigating negative effects on valuable wildlife habitat.”
- Carolyn Dobbs and Russell Fox; AWL members, Member of the Faculty and Academic Dean, The Evergreen State College, WA
“It is encouraging to see an environmental organization not simply focused on the marquee issues (bears, wolves and Bush) and using scientists before lawyers. Good Luck.”
- Bob von Pentz; AWL member, Washington, DC
“Organizations like American Wildlands are essential in building an understanding of the impacts rapid development have on wildlife habitat in this region. For example, the Gallatin River is near and dear to my heart and AWL is the force trying to proactively achieve the long overdue protection for the river.”
- Mike Augustine, AWL member and former AWL Board chair, Bozeman MT
“I can still remember my first cutthroat… I strongly support American Wildlands’ efforts to help save Montana’s and Idaho’s state fish – the westslope cutthroat trout.”
-Bud Lilly, Angling Pioneer and AWL Director-At-Large, Manhattan, MT
“In the next decade, forecasts predict that unparalleled pressure will be placed upon desirable destinations to accommodate the quest for paradise. True sustainable development can be achieved when all key elements (community, economy, environment) are respected throughout a reality-based growth process. We will continue to support AWL in its efforts to promote a positive and balanced outcome for all of us.”
- Andrea & Bruce Tyson, AWL members, Naples FL
“I am impressed that AWL takes member outreach so seriously, especially considering I’m living here in the east! Their publications hammer home just how small (relatively) a group AWL is, making the group's achievements all that much more impressive.”
- Christopher Reiger; AWL member, Astoria, NY
“American Wildlands is “an effective organization that is being run with a minimum number of people and a small budget.”
– Pard Cummings, AWL member, Bozeman MT
