Why Choose Community GIS Services at American Wildlands?

As a non-profit at the vanguard of science-based conservation advocacy, American Wildlands has worked to safeguard and restore wildlife habitat and its connectivity in the Northern Rockies for over a quarter-century. Here are the reasons to partner with our GIS Services program for your next project:

Proven record:

In 2001, our GIS Lab extended its resourcefulness in supporting AWL’s own programs to other public-interest non-profits in the region. Since then, we have applied GIS to effect real progress in the program goals of a broad range of partner organizations.

Commitment to non-profits:

We are dedicated to sharing the advantages of GIS with other non-profit organizations for whom the costs in resource and time would otherwise be prohibitive. Being a non-profit ourselves, we understand the very dynamic contexts in which partner organizations operate. In response, we have organized ourselves to respond most quickly and flexibly to your project needs, even if they evolve in response to changes in your external factors.

Customized projects: We offer a range of geospatial services that can be brought to bear in a tailored realization of your objectives. To minimize your costs and ensure your satisfaction with results, we work with you early to articulate the nature of the problem you face and to identify the optimal ways by which GIS can advance your goals.

Economical rates:

Because we are a non-profit working solely for other non-profits, we offer standard rates that are much lower than those of any commercial GIS firm. For organizations whose missions coincide with AWL’s own conservation vision, we offer even lower rates through our cost-sharing program. Finally, for certain groups with particularly limited staff and budgets, we can extend our services pro bono.

Staff expertise:

As an integral part of American Wildlands, our Lab applies geographic information and analysis in direct support of our four other core programs. In so doing, our GIS staff work as more than technicians; they must also support and help maintain the integrity of the scientific grounding of our programs. Consequently, in addition to keeping apace of ongoing developments in GIS technologies, they remain versed in relevant aspects and trends in conservation biology, landscape ecology, and GISc(ience). Combined with the advantage of further scientific, legal, and policy expertise among our program staff, this background can readily culminate in results for your organization that are not only visually compelling, but strategically conceived and scientifically defensible.
